Meet Charlie Ruiz Vazquez
How do you identify?
Tell us about yourself:
I have lived in Boyle Heights, CA for my entire life. I come from an immigrant family and spoke Spanish first. I majored in English Literature and Creative Writing at CSUN. I have one dog and one bird as a pet. My favorite color is pink.
Fun fact about you:
I have listened to Japanese rock since I was in the 8th grade.
Any advice you’d like to share or for your younger self:
You do not need to conform to the image of the "ideal" queer person. Embrace your curves, embrace your natural hair, and embrace your skin. Be proud, out, loud, and brown, little homie. You got this.
What is your favorite Pride / Queer memory?
My first Pride was in 2015, my favorite memory was when I was walking in the parade with the Los Angeles LGBT Center and I saw someone in the crowd crying, and I walked over to hug them and they shared their story on 2015 being their first Pride. I was overcome with emotion and I hugged them again and I told them that they are beautiful and I was happy that they were there with me at Pride.
What does this community mean to you?
Community means family and belonging.
Why did you want to be involved in this project?
My friend told me about it and I think it's a great idea. It is a super cute idea.
